Fermilabby Thomas Garman | 06/20/2009 This weekend I walked to Fermilab. I was motivated by a desire to see the Buffalo preserve in the context of a restored Prairie. It is very easy to walk to Fermilab from the Geneva Metra, but it is not easy to walk from Fermilab to the West Chicago Metra station. Here are some photos from my walk: http://picasaweb.google.com/thomas.garman/Fermilab?feat=directlink

Glad the Geneva Metra stop
Glad the Geneva Metra stop worked out. How large is the prairie area? Is it the kind of place where you'd feel like you're going for a short walk in the prairie, or is it more of a tiny "this is what prairie looks like" exhibit?
The prairie area is really
The prairie area is really quite large, but most of it is off limits to the public. They have special events were one can visit the grounds and see the parts that are closed to the public. I wouldn't call it an exhibit in any sense, because they have no signage set up and there are no explanations anywhere of what is being done to develop the prairie.
So, there are a few designated areas that have short paths through them that one can walk around. I walked through the whole place and went through all of the side paths (all of which are less than a half a mile long) in about two hours. Just going to look at the prairie isn't really worth it, but if you can schedule some other activities, like visiting different parts of the actual Fermilab complex, then I would suggest it. They do schedule quite a lot of activities for the public at Fermilab.
It is about 4 miles from the Geneva Metra to Fermilab, and about a mile and a half of that walk is along the fox river trail. The downtown area of Batavia is very inviting too. There are several little pub/grill type places that looked fun, but I didn't that aspect of the town on this visit. I will go back. This particular outing was mainly just to see how hard it would be to get there.
